Good morning, Jelanah. Thank you for joining us today. Can you tell us about your experience as an engineering student at the University of Cincinnati?

Jelanah: Good morning, and thank you for having me. My experience at the University of Cincinnati was nothing short of excellent. As an engineering student, I was constantly pushed academically, but I also took full advantage of the various extracurricular activities the university had to offer. I am a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the National Association of Black Engineers, and other black organizations on campus. These organizations played a crucial role in my college experience, providing unwavering support and a sense of community. Through my involvement in these organizations, I was able to connect and build relationships with other students who shared similar experiences and backgrounds, which was vital for me as a minority student on campus. Being a part of these organizations allowed me to develop my leadership skills, improve my communication abilities, and understand the importance of networking. I learned how to manage my time effectively and balance my academic workload with extracurricular activities, which gave me confidence in myself and my capabilities. My connections within these organizations led to internships and job opportunities that may have needed to be reached with these relationships. The power of networking cannot be underestimated, and I am grateful for the relationships I built at the University of Cincinnati.

Can you tell us about your experience with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and how it has impacted your professional and personal life?

Jelanah: My experience with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA) has been transformative. Growing up, my dad, a Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated member, always knew I would become a member of AKA. Being a member of AKA has opened doors for professional opportunities for me. By networking with other alums and members, I secured my first internship. AKA has had a profound impact on my personal life. It has given me a sisterhood of supportive and empowering women who have become lifelong friends. Through AKA, I have had the chance to engage in various community service activities. AKA’s emphasis on service has inspired me to give back to my community and make a positive difference. AKA has provided me with a strong sense of community. The bond I share with my sorority sisters is extraordinary. Whether it be supporting each other academically, emotionally, or professionally, I always had a network of like-minded individuals to turn to. It’s comforting to know that wherever I go, I have a network of sisters who are always there for support and guidance.

Can you tell us about your journey from being a data analyst at Allstate to transitioning into software engineering at LinkedIn?

Jelanah: While working as a data analyst, I realized my passion for coding and software development. I decided to make a career change and pursue my dream of becoming a woman in tech. After researching various tech companies, I set my sights on LinkedIn and decided to apply.  When researching tech companies, LinkedIn stood out to me for several reasons. The company’s culture and values also appealed to me, making it clear that LinkedIn fit my career aspirations.

After realizing my passion for coding, I transitioned from a data analyst at Allstate to a software engineer at LinkedIn. I prepared for my career change by doing self-study, online courses, and participating in coding challenges and hackathons. LinkedIn’s commitment to diversity, focus on professional networking, and culture and values appealed to me. Working at LinkedIn has been incredible and provided a stimulating and supportive environment where I have worked on diverse and challenging projects. The company’s emphasis on personal and professional development has allowed me to expand my skill set and thrive in my role. Additionally, LinkedIn actively promotes diversity and inclusion initiatives, ensuring that women in tech are given equal opportunities to succeed.

Can you tell us about your experience as a black woman student in college, particularly regarding discrimination and facing stereotypes? What advice do you have for other students experiencing similar challenges and facing discrimination in their academic and professional pursuits?

Jelanah: As a black woman student in college, I faced discrimination from some of my peers who stereotyped me based on my race and gender. Despite being one of the few black students in a particular class or program, I refused to let these biases hold me back. I knew I had to work twice as hard to combat stereotypes and prove my abilities to my peers. I dedicated myself to my studies, participated actively in class, and asked questions to show that I was a serious and committed student. My hard work paid off when I got the highest grade in one of my classes, which helped me prove to my peers that I was a capable student despite the stereotypes. Over time, my peers began to see me as an equal, and the stereotypes faded. This experience taught me firsthand how damaging and hurtful racial and gender stereotypes can be. It made me more aware of my biases and how important it is to combat them actively. This experience has influenced my career aspirations, and I’m dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in my field. I continually improve my skills and knowledge in my field, knowing that hard work and dedication are the keys to success. My advice would be never to let the biases and stereotypes of others hold you back. Instead, they use their negative views as motivation to work harder and prove them wrong. Seek out mentors and advocates who can offer support and guidance. Don’t be afraid to speak up and assert yourself when you feel marginalized or discriminated against. Lastly, believe in your abilities and never give up on your dreams.

Can you tell us about the importance of self-care and maintaining a work-life balance?

Jelanah: Self-care and work-life balance are essential to my life. Taking care of myself physically and mentally is critical for my overall well-being and success in all areas of life. It enables me to recharge, rejuvenate, and maintain a healthy mindset, positively impacting my personal life. To prioritize self-care, I set clear boundaries and dedicate time to activities that bring me joy and relaxation. One of my favorite ways to escape from the stresses of everyday life is through reading, particularly fantasy novels that transport me to another world and allow me to unwind and recharge. I also make it a point to engage in physical activities like tennis, which keeps me fit, helps me focus on my mental health, and provides an outlet for stress. Engaging in activities like reading and playing tennis helps me disconnect from work and immerse myself in moments of pure enjoyment. It allows me to temporarily escape from the demands of my professional life and find solace in activities I am passionate about. This helps me relax and recharge, improving my focus and productivity when I return to work. These activities also serve as a form of self-expression, enabling me to explore different aspects outside my professional identity.

Could you shed some light on this perspective and why age and the traditional path may not define success?

Jelanah: Certainly. It’s essential to stop measuring our success based on others’ accomplishments or societal expectations. Age is just a number, and everyone has a unique journey. It’s okay to follow the traditional path of going to college right after high school to achieve success. Success looks different for everyone, and it’s about finding what fulfills you personally and professionally. Your path may involve taking breaks, trying different things, or pursuing unconventional routes. Focusing on your growth, learning, and future self is essential, rather than comparing yourself to others or adhering to societal norms. Remember that success is subjective and unique to each individual. Don’t let society’s expectations or comparisons with others discourage you. Embrace your journey and recognize that it’s okay to take detours, explore different options, and learn from your experiences. Trust yourself and your ability to create your path  to success. Surround yourself with a robust support system, stay focused on your goals, and believe in your capabilities. Remember, your journey is yours alone, and there is no predetermined timeline for success.

Could you please share your favorite high school memory with us?

Jelanah: I loved being part of the basketball and drill team in high school. These experiences offered unique opportunities for growth, friendships, and personal development. As a team member, I learned the value of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. The lessons I learned continue to resonate with me today. The shared moments of victories and challenges have taught me essential life skills that I continue to carry with me. Being on the drill team allowed me to express my creativity; it was a fantastic outlet for self-expression and a chance to be part of a close-knit community. I strongly encourage others to get involved in extracurricular activities during high school. These activities offer so much more than just a break from academics. From sports teams, arts clubs, student government, or any other variety of options, there is something for everyone. By participating in extracurricular activities, students can form lasting friendships, build self-confidence, and learn valuable lessons that will benefit them personally and professionally.

Thank you, Jelanah, for sharing your journey post-high school. It’s inspiring to hear how well our Vikings are doing. We wish you continued success in all your future endeavors.

Jelanah: Thank you for having me.
