Were you at Northland in the 1990 School Year? Twenty-five years ago the US population was 249,438,712 people and the average life expectancy was 75.4 years. The median household income was $29,943 and the average new home cost $149,800. At the local grocery store a gallon of milk ($2.78) along with a dozen eggs ($1.00) was just a little under four dollars. A gallon of gas was $1.16 and a postage stamp was $0.25 ~ email anyone?
At the academy Awards, the “Oscar” winner for Best Actor was Jeremy Irons and Kathy Bates won for Best Actress. Best Director went to Kevin Costner for his efforts on the years Best Picture winner ~ Do you remember this third top grossing movie? Rumor has it that the cast did a little jig with some canines when they won the Oscar. The top money-making movie that year was “Home Alone.”
The top rated television show was “Cheers”, with “60 Minutes” and “Rosanne” rounding out the top three. The Emmy voters loved “Cheers”, giving it the Best Comedy award with its actors – Kirstie Alley / Best Actress and Bebe Nuewirth/ Best Supporting Actress.
For Dramas, “Gabriel’s Fire” performers James Earl Jones won for Best Actor and Madge Sinclair won Best Supporting Actress. With “thirtysomething” actors Patricia Wettig winning Best Actress and Timothy Busfield taking Best Supporting Actor.
At the Grammys, album of the year was “Back on the Block” by Quincy Jones. Phil Collins won Record of the Year with “Another Day in Paradise”, while the Billboard Top Song was “Because I Love You (The Postman Song)” by Stevie B. Taking Best New Artist? A young Mariah Carey.
In the world of sports, the NY Giants won Super Bowl XXV (Buffalo missed a field goal in the closing minutes), the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup (fifth win in seven years), the Detroit Pistons won their second in a row NBA championship, and the Cincinnati Reds won their fifth and (so far) last World Series.

Homecoming Queen Lauren Usciloski and King Curtis Mack.
In sports some teams prospered and some fell short but all fought hard in true Viking spirit. Teams that claimed City League titles were girl’s tennis, boy’s tennis, boy’s swim team, softball, and girl’s track who also took 4th place in the state meet.
And as always, student life was as hectic and fun as ever…

But not without a dose of reality to remind us to cherish it all.
