NHS Flashback To… 1974

Were you at Northland in the 1974 school year? Fifty years ago, the US population was 213,853,928 people and the average life expectancy was 72.0 years. The median household income was 11,197 and the average new home cost $38,900. At the local grocery store it would cost you a little over two dollars for a gallon of milk ($1.57) and a dozen eggs ($0.78). A gallon of gasoline was $0.53 and a postage stamp was $0.10. At the Academy Awards, The “Oscar” winner for Best Actor was Art Carney (“Harry and Tonto”), and Ellen Burstyn (“Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”) was Best Actress. What movie won Best Director (Francis Coppola), Best Picture (Coppola/Frederickson/Roos) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert DeNiro) ~ Do you remember the movie? The two top money making movies were “Blazing Saddles” and “The Towering Inferno.”

The top-rated television show was  “All in the Family”, with “Sanford and Son” second. The Emmy Award for best drama went to “Masterpiece Theatre: Upstairs, Downstairs”, and the best comedy award went to “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.”  Album of the year was “Fulfillingness’ First Finale” by Stevie Wonder. Olivia Newton-John won Record of the Year with “I Honestly Love You”, while the Billboard Top Song was “Bennie and the Jets” by Elton John.

In the world of sports, the Pittsburg Steelers won Super BowlIX, the Philadelphia Flyers won the Stanley Cup, The Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship, and the Oakland A’s won the World Series.
