NHSAF visit to Moody Nolan
NHS 2002 graduate Jonathan Moody welcomed NHSAF visitors on August 10, 2017 to the family architecture business in downtown Columbus. Established in 1982, the company has nine offices around the country with about 200 employees, and is expanding. Thank you, Jon, for sharing a tour of your offices with members of your Viking family, which included Principal Jason Johnson, retired teacher Alvin Simpson, several NHS students and NHS alumni. A NHSAF meeting was held after the tour in the company board room overlooking downtown Columbus.

Chuck Deyo Scholarship Recipients
NHSAF congratulates the 2016 Deyo Scholarship winners!
The 2016 Chuck Deyo Scholarships were presented at the NHS Awards Ceremony in May. Recipients Cierra King and Wedly Cazy received the awards from NHSAF Board Members Neal (Ric) Johnson and Randy Suver, both from Class of 71.
Seniors Cierra King and Wedly Cazy received certificates of award at the Northland HS Awards Ceremony May 19th.
NHSAF Board Members Neal (Ric) Johnson and Randy Suver were on hand to make the presentations.
Each student will receive $1,500 to use for their college education. Cierra will attend Denison University to earn a degree in Communications and Public Relations.
Wedly will be going to Ohio State to study Fashion Merchandising and pursue an advanced business degree.
NHSAF salutes this second year of recipients and also those who applied for the Deyo Scholarship. We wish them well as they graduate high school and move on to college!
We say goodbye to our teacher and friend, Chuck Deyo
Northland teacher and coach Chuck Deyo passed away on June 16, 2015, after a two year-long battle with cancer. A loving memorial service was held at Galena United Methodist Church on June 27th, and it was no surprise to see the sanctuary and lobby filled to capacity with people from Ohio and out of state. It was a heartfelt tribute to Chuck and his family. Chuck’s family expressed how humbled they were by the outpouring of love and support shared by so many from Northland.
NHSAF thanks all the Vikings who offered support in some way, whether with cards of encouragement, personal visits, help with painting the wrestling room and the following surprise wrestling room dedication to Chuck, or with The Chuck Roast in April that raised over $34,000 for the Chuck Deyo Scholarship Fund. Chuck’s genuine smile was his constant sign of appreciation. The first two Deyo scholarships were awarded in May, and Chuck will continue to be remembered at Northland through these yearly awards made in his name. Donations can be made to the Chuck Deyo Scholarship Fund on the “Donate’ page.
So many Northland Vikings grew to become better people because of Chuck’s influence on their lives, not only in his classroom as a teacher, but on the sports fields as he coached, and well after the high school arena with his continued friendship in life. His positive influence has had an impact on so many. Chuck’s welcoming grin and cheerful spirit will be remembered always.

Deyo Charles A. Deyo, 76, of Galena, Ohio, lost his battle with cancer on June 16, 2015. He was born on August 26, 1938 to the late Robert H. and Goldie Lane Deyo. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carol, and their children, Brad (Marcia), and Brian (Pam), and two grandchildren, Tyler and Jessica, who he loved very much, along with the family’s pets, Patches, Pepper, Cabo, Zoom, Angel and Tigger. Chuck graduated from Columbus Central High School in 1957, where he earned All-City and All-State honors in football. He was drafted by Woody Hayes to play football at the Ohio State University. During the two years he played there, he earned a pair of gold pants when OSU beat Michigan. After a brief break in college, he enrolled at Otterbein College where he played his remaining year of eligibility and graduated in 1963 with a BS in Education. He later earned his MS in Education at Xavier University. Chuck started his teaching and coaching career in the Columbus City School District at Franklin Junior High School and went on to East High School as an assistant football and head wrestling coach. In 1968, Frank Howe (his former high school coach) had an opening at Northland High School and invited Chuck to join his staff in football and become the head wrestling coach. He later added girls fast pitch softball when he dropped football so he could watch his son play. Chuck’s teams were very successful and won many city championships and tournaments during his 33 years of coaching. He loved his students and athletes and kept in contact with them in the years after his retirement in 1995. All of his life he had wanted to fly, so he took flight lessons and earned his Private Pilot, Instrument Rating, and Commercial licenses after his retirement. He was able to fly people all around the country in single engine planes for several years. He finished his working career at The Ohio State University Airport, retiring from there in September of 2014. He was blessed to teach, coach and work with exceptional people who he dearly loved and who he kept in touch with all the years of his life. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 27, at 1 p.m., at the Galena Methodist Church, 2777 Sunbury Road, Galena, Ohio 43021 with Pastor Dirk Wooten officiating. Arrangements entrusted to DeVORE-SNYDER FUNERAL HOME in Sunbury. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Chuck’s memory to Ohio Health Kobacker House, 800 McConnell Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43214. The First Chuck Deyo Scholarship Recipients
Meet the first recipients of the NHSAF Chuck Deyo Scholarship for scholar athletes! Among their many high school achievements, Aleah Holley and Morgan Ly both have better than a 4.0 cumulative GPA, have competed in three sports while at Northland, and also have competed in national competitions with the S.T.E.M Club. Aleah, an All-City Cross Country member, will attend Miami University to earn a degree in International Studies before studying to become a lawyer. Morgan, who ran Cross Country and Track and played baseball, will attend OSU, and has set his sites to become a doctor.
All 2015 applicants for the scholarship were beyond outstanding and have much to look forward to in their bright futures. The Chuck Deyo Scholarship awards were presented during the high school awards ceremony by NHSAF Board members Ric (Neal) Johnson ’71, Bobbi Moore Ruhl ’69, and Randy Suver ’71. The Chuck Roast was a great success, with over 225 people attending! Thanks for sharing the night with Chuck, and thanks to those who also came out the night before to surprise him at the unveiling of the NHS wrestling room. The facelift looked amazing! And so did Chuck’s ear-to-ear grin!

Graduates seek ways to ‘give back’ to the school
A group of Northland High School graduates in central Ohio have gotten together to breathe new life into a foundation that aims to create closer bonds between alumni while helping current students.
“Fundamentally, we just want to reconnect the alumni with each other and with the school, and connect students with the alumni, because there’s a great history and tradition with the school,” Sean Milner, who graduated from NHS in 1986, said last week.
“They’ll be able to learn more about the past and we’ll learn more about the present.”
“There’s a lot of interest in that now,” said Bobbie Ruhl, a member of the class of 1969.
“The bottom line to it is that Northland has given us so much, what we’re trying to do is pay back,” 1971 graduate Ric Johnson said.
The rejuvenated organization for Northland High alumni received a major boost during a gathering held the night before this past football season’s homecoming game, Ruhl said. U.S. Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-Genoa Township), who counts himself among the school’s graduates, attended and even led the alumni band, according to Ruhl.
The fundraising efforts that have taken place for the foundation enabled the group to provide the school’s STEM Team with a check for $2,000 to help pay for a trip to a national competition, said Ruhl, a Columbus City Schools substitute teacher.
“Right now, we’re just trying to coalesce our finances together,” said Johnson, who founded the all-class “First Saturday in August” reunions.
Milner, who started a softball game for NHS grads around 20 years ago, said he hopes the foundation one day becomes a self-sufficient organization that can underwrite scholarships for students.
“Initially, the idea is we want to have something that’s a way for people to network,” Milner said. “Through the events and things we’re going to do, hopefully people say they want to give back to the school, whether it’s monetarily or through some other means … maybe come to class and talk about their lives.”
“Northland is a big part of what got us where we are today,” Johnson said.
